Why Do Some People Become Addicted, While Others Do Not?

A specific factor cannot be guessed whether or not a person will get addicted to drugs. Risk for addiction is affected by a person’s biology, social environment, and development. The more number of risk factors an individual experiences, the greater the chance of taking drugs which can result in addiction.

  • Biology: The genes with which people are born, when combined with environmental impact, will increase the chances of making person vulnerable to drug. Moreover, gender, ethnicity, and the existence of mental disorders may also have impact on risk for drug abuse and addiction.
  • Environment: A person’s environment consists of several different forms of impact from family and friends to socioeconomic condition and quality of life in general. Factors like peer pressure, physical and sexual abuse, stress, and parental embarrassment can have high impact on the scope of drug abuse and addiction in a person’s life.
  • Development: Genetic and environmental factors get connected with significant developmental stages in a person’s life and makes a person more vulnerable to addiction. Even though consuming of drugs at any age can result in addiction, the earlier drug use begins, the more chances of exposing to more serious abuse. As adolescents’ brains will be in the developing stage in the areas that influence decision making, judgment, and self-control, they are particularly more prone to risk-taking behaviors, like experimenting drugs of abuse.
